Gov't must continue uniting the people

Facing an escalation of the current global crisis, the Megawati-Hamzah Haz administration should intensify its consultation with the people's representatives in the political sector, religious leaders, business people and others from all walks of life.

Today, the impact of increased conflict between the United States and Afghanistan will become greater in many countries, Muslim ones in particular. The impact in Indonesia is clear.

We hope that the government calls for a ceasefire between the U.S. and Afghanistan.

Anti-West demonstrations in Indonesia following the U.S. strike on Afghanistan are lawful so long as they do not become anarchic.

Other countries have also staged protests against the U.S. strike. Foreign governments have been trying hard to determine their positions in relation to international solidarity and national interest.

For a country like Indonesia, which is still deep in crisis, determining such a position should be a top priority.

Understanding and unity among Indonesians are necessary in facing the current global crisis and conflict.
