Plus they drained the peat bogs for Suharto's Mega Rice fuck up thus massively adding to global warming. Indo rice is crap anyway, all sticky and stodgy. They should at least grow long grain. Or

JAKCHAT/Govt aims to achieve rice, corn self sufficiency in 2014
teh rice self-sufficiency fetish seems common in asia. perhaps it can be traced back to when famines were more common in these parts.
what ever the reason, indonesian farmers are not very good at rice growing. they are not especially productive and they demand (and a given) subsidised fuel and fertilizers to grow their sub-standard products. furthermore, they are protected from competition from efficient rice producers like vietnam.

JAKCHAT/Govt aims to achieve rice, corn self sufficiency in 2014
"Self-sufficiency in food production as a manifestation of food resilience is of great importance to meet the people`s basic necessities, and ensure national economic and political stability," he said.
Bollocks, it's just typical Indo rice fetishism. Why self sufficient in rice? Why not sugar, tea, courgettes, broccoli? They should be diversifying their agricultural output and getting some cash crops going. What need for self sufficiency in a global marketplace? You buy what you need and sell what you grow.

ANT/Govt aims to achieve rice, corn self sufficiency in 2014
Maros, S Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The government has set itself the target of achieving self sufficiency in rice and corn production in 2014, a minister said.
To that end, the government had targeted the annual increase in rice and corn production at 3.22 percent and 10.02 percent respectively, Agriculture Minister Suswono said here on Monday.
"This means that by 2014 rice production will reach 75.7 million tons and corn 17.66 million tons," he said.
In 2010 alone, rice production had been projected to reach 66.88 million tons and corn 19.8 million tons, he said.
"Rice and corn are strategic commodities and are among the five main focuses of the agricultural development," he said.
The program to increase rice and corn production in the next five years would be directed towards achieving sustained self-sufficiency in the two commodities, he said.
"Self-sufficiency in food production as a manifestation of food resilience is of great importance to meet the people`s basic necessities, and ensure national economic and political stability," he said.
Sustained self-sufficiency in food production would also enable the country to reduce its dependence on imported food staples and eventually play a greater role in fulfilling global demand for food, he said.(*)
