Governor Sutiyoso to consider nomination for Perbakin chief

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian Shooting and Hunting Association (Perbakin) Executive Director Sutiyoso says he will consider his nomination for association chairman for the coming term.

Sutiyoso, who is also the governor of Jakarta, told reporters yesterday after a meeting with National Sports Council Chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar that he would have to seek permission from his superior, the minister of internal affairs.

"You know I have many jobs to do, especially since becoming governor," he said. "I've been in the association for two terms. The first was from 1989 to 1993 as a deputy of the target division and the second was from 1993 to 1997 as the executive director. I think it's enough."

"So far we haven't heard any names nominated to chair the association," he added.

The association will hold a national congress at the Borobudur Intercontinental Hotel, Central Jakarta, from Nov. 21 to Nov. 23.

The congress was to have taken place in October but the association had to delay it due to the 19th SEA Games being held here.

Sutiyoso said the association has been grooming women military officers to compete in the Asian Games in the women's trap event.

"We have been grooming them in Cilodong (West Java) as part of our long-term program to improve our position in Asia," he said. "Right now we're number two after China. I hope we can win the silver in the 13th Asian Games."

"I don't think we have a good chance of reaching the top eight in other events," he added.

The council has named 16 potential sports to compete in the Asian Games. Shooting was excluded even though the Indonesian team won 11 golds in the SEA Games.

Sutiyoso said the congress, which will be attended by 27 representatives of the association's provincial branches, will discuss reports from each branch and the association's national committee.

"The congress will also decide the new officials for the 1997 to 2001 period," he said.

Badminton

Former shuttler Icuk Sugianto, who is also the Badminton Association of Indonesia's West Jakarta mayoralty branch chairman, said later yesterday that he would nominate both businessman Aburizal Bakrie and Army Deputy Chief of Staff Subagyo Hadi Siswoyo.

"I think we should include both Pak Ical (Aburizal) and Pak Subagyo as the dual leaders at the congress," he said.

The West Jakarta mayoralty branch named Ical as its nominee for the chairmanship, while four other branches have nominated Subagyo for election at the national congress, which will take place at Hotel Indonesia between Nov. 29 and Dec. 1.

The Jakarta branch's nomination has been supported by 10 other branches: West Java, Central Java, East Java, Yogyakarta, Lampung, South Sumatra, North Sumatra, Bali, North Sulawesi and Irian Jaya.

Icuk, who is also the chairman of the Pelita Bakrie club, said the association needs both figures as Ical and Subagyo.

"Subagyo will be needed as the decision maker while Ical will be needed as the manager, especially for the financial problems which have affected the association for several years," he said. (yan)
