Governor proposed for ministerial post

JAKARTA (JP): The dominant Golkar's city chapter said Governor Surjadi Soedirdja should be nominated for a ministerial post after his five-year term ends.

The chapter's chairman, Tadjus Sobirin, said the proposal was made because the governor had made a success of the city's development projects.

"No city governor has ever been a minister," he said.

Surjadi could be nominated as a minister or renominated as governor, Tadjus said.

He refused to say what ministry Surjadi should head.

He said the criteria for the next governor were "capability, acceptability, religious faith and harmony in his family."

If his family turned out well it would at least mean the candidate had good leadership potential, Tadjus said.

Earlier Tadjus said he would announce Golkar's candidate for the next governor. Yesterday he said Golkar did not have other candidates.

Surjadi's term ends on Oct. 6. He is entitled to one more term.

Tadjus said Golkar has 500 campaigners but was still deciding where to campaign.

In nine campaign rounds each contestant is allowed to campaign in four subdistricts, three districts and two mayoralties.

He said the three contestants still wanted to meet the governor on April 23, about Golkar's proposed increase in the number of city councilors from 75 to 100.

Golkar is aiming to increase its number of seats in the council from 32 to 37. (11)
