Government to build quake-proof schools

JAKARTA: The Ministry of National Education is planning to build earthquake-proof schools in quake-prone areas across the country.

"We have sent a team representing all directorates to Alor in East Nusa Tenggara to make an inventory of damaged schools, and price building materials. We expect to do the same in Nabire, Papua," the ministry's directorate general of elementary and middle school education, Indra Jati Sidi, said on Monday.

Two major earthquakes and aftershocks rattled Alor and Nabire in the past two weeks, killing at least 50 people and injuring hundreds of others, as well as razing buildings, including schools. --Antara
