Golkar chairman Tadjus resigns

JAKARTA (JP): Golkar Party city chapter chairman Tadjus Sobirin, who has often been criticized for his poor leadership, announced his resignation on Tuesday following demands for his replacement in an expedited congress.

"I sent my resignation letter to chairman of the Golkar Party's Central Board Akbar Tandjung today," Tadjus, who is also a city councillor, told reporters at the council.

He revealed that the central board had planned a two-day expedited congress starting on Wednesday at the party's main office in Slipi, West Jakarta.

He admitted that he had formed a team in an attempt to halt the expedited congress, but it failed as Golkar's branches in all five mayoralties, with the exception of the East Jakarta branch, supported the congress.

Tadjus, a former Tangerang regent and a retired army colonel, had chaired the Golkar Party's city chapter since 1993 and was scheduled to end his term next year.(jun)
