Golden Gloves sees 78 boxers
JAKARTA (JP): The Golden Gloves amateur boxing championship will revive after a four-year absence in Ujungpandang, South Sulawesi.
The competition, for which 78 boxers have confirmed entry, is scheduled for July 23-30.
The boxing meet, jointly organized by the Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association (Pertina) and the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI), will contest 10 divisions. It is meant to serve as a testing ground for the pugilists named to represent Indonesia in Hiroshima's Asian Games in October.
Pertina's executive chairman, Imron ZS, said yesterday the national amateur boxing body had considered restoring the once prestigious tournament as an annual event. The Golden Gloves championship, initiated in 1976, was last held in Surabaya in 1990. (amd)
