Going green with mangroves

SEMARANG, Central Java: The mayor, in cooperation with several non-governmental organizations and financial institutions, has embarked on a project to re-green its coasts with mangroves.

The project aims to plant mangroves, vital for protecting the coast from erosion and for providing homes for fish, along the 200 hectare coastline.

"We need several hundred million rupiah to replant the mangroves," mayor Soetrisno Suharto said yesterday.

The mayor said the project was an actualization of the government's determination to carry out environmentally sound development programs. (har)
