Ginandjar denies reshuffle rumors
JAKARTA (JP): Coordinating Minister for Economy, Finance and Industry Ginandjar Kartasasmita denied yesterday resurgent rumors he was planning to quit his post and that several ministers under his coordination would be reshuffled.
"I have no intention to step down now because my job isn't finished yet," he was quoted by Antara news agency as telling journalists here.
"As long as I am needed, I'll stay in this government until it finishes its duty, that is until the general election and presidential election."
His statement was a direct refutal of speculation growing since last month over the allegedly unsatisfactory performance of the Cabinet's economic team.
Critics blamed poor coordination for the introduction of several conflicting economic policies.
Ginandjar made light of the criticism.
"I even laughed when I read newspapers that reported the coordination is not running well. As a matter of fact, the coordination in economics is the best in the present Cabinet," he said.
"If there should be a reshuffle in the economics (section of the Cabinet), as a coordinating minister I would be consulted first (by President B.J. Habibie). There has not been any consultation on the matter."
Last month, the media speculated that Habibie might drop several senior officials and ministers.
In addition to Ginandjar, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare and Poverty Alleviation Haryono Suyono, State Minister of the Empowerment of State Enterprises Tanri Abeng, Band Indonesia Governor Sjahril Sabirin and State Logistics Agency Chairman Beddu Amang were also included in the rumors.
