Get rid of traffic `directors'
Get rid of traffic `directors'
I heartily disagree with K. Kunze's comments on the boys who
direct traffic (The Jakarta Post, June 20, 1994).
Far from doing a "great job," these busily unproductive
opportunists have no authority to control traffic and in fact
contribute to the "utter mayhem" of Jakarta's streets which is
described on page three of the same issue.
Often there are three or four "directors" who give conflicting
instructions. A large proportion of drivers ignore their
directions, which merely increases the hazards of negotiating the
junction.
If the authorities have insufficient resources to provide
proper traffic controllers at these junctions, they should at
least as an interim measure clear the unofficial ones off the
streets.
