Genies in 'Wishmaster' and journey to Mars this weekend

JAKARTA (JP): A few options on the big screens around Jakarta include the genie of Wishmaster, Fire Down Below, My Best Friend's Wedding, Mimic, Event Horizon and The Game.

Here's a sketch of three of them:

Event Horizon (Cast: Sam Neil, Laurence Fishburne) Director: Paul Anderson.

In 2040, an expedition begins on Mars. The spacecraft disappears and a rescue team from earth runs into horrific encounters. Attempts to explain deaths are equally mysterious. A timely film in the midst of reports of the findings by the Mars Pathfinder mission that Mars may have once looked like Earth.

Wishmaster (Cast: Tammy Lauren, Andrew Divoff, Tonny Todd) Director: Robert Kurtzman.

Wish for anything you want -- but finding out the limits can be costly, because this genie is not quite like Aladdin's companion.

In 900, a genie tempted a king to make three wishes so the genie could be released from his prison. The king refused and the genie had to wait over a thousand years for his second chance, when an archeologist (Tammy Lauren) came along. This was followed by other successes in tempting the human craving.

Fire Down Below (Cast: Steven Seagal, Marg Helgenberger, Kris Kristofferson). Director: Felix Enriquez Alacala

Jack Taggart (Steven Seagal) is an agent of America's Environmental Protection Agency, assigned to the Appalachia Mountains in Kentucky.

He investigates the death of a colleague, who was believed to be dumped into toxic waste, and aims to catch the criminal. He faces widespread hostility from residents, including the mining entrepreneur Orin Hanner (Kris Kristofferson), so the agent must try to blend in and work his way to his goal. (anr)
