Garbage containers cause traffic jam

JAKARTA: The East Jakarta sanitation office has put garbage in containers at the roadside before transporting it to the final dump, causing traffic jams in the area.

Head of the office Ratim Aman told beritajakarta.com that the garbage was put in containers along Jl. Jatinegara Barat, Jl. Otista and Jl. Dewi Sartika as they found it difficult to find a site for use as a temporary waste dump due to opposition from local residents.

"They object, saying that it will cause pollution and is dirty. We've always encountered problems in finding suitable sites," he said last week, adding that what they needed was merely a 100-square-meter plot for the temporary site.

Jakarta produces more than 25,000 cubic meters, or 6,000 tons of garbage daily. Most of it is transported to the Bantar Gebang site in Bekasi.--JP
