Gambling should be legalized for the rich only

While law enforcers deny its existence, gambling is rampant throughout the country. Former governor Ali Sadikin has proposed that gambling, which by law is a crime, should be legalized. The Jakarta Post asked Jakarta residents their view.

I agree with legalizing gambling as long as it is only allowed for the rich. This way, the government could use the money to help the poor. Casinos should be isolated.

Problems caused by legalized gambling would be no greater than those caused by illegal gambling. If the government legalizes gambling, then it should eliminate illegal gambling dens.

Also, a national lottery should be set up again, one that is open to everyone. When they had the SDSB, it seemed to really help the government's finances.

Gambling is good for Indonesia. I'm not kidding, I agree with Ali Sadikin and think it would be one of the best ways to build Indonesia. Although I don't gamble now, I'd be happy to visit a legal casino and spend my money there.

Look at the current situation. Although gambling is illegal, it is everywhere, even in villages. People gamble on everything, from soccer matches to the results of TV shows. Illegal gambling dens are located in public places, sometimes even near schools, it sets a bad example for the children.

The poor people who gamble will most likely remain poor. Rather than giving their money away to a thug or a corrupt cop, it would be better for the government to take it and redistribute, eventually it will go back to them.

As for the rich, the money that they gamble stays in the same circle. When they win, they deposit it outside of Indonesia. When they lose, the money goes to the dealers, who also deposit it outside of Indonesia. It would be better if the government regulated it properly.
