Gambir station to build fence

JAKARTA (JP): The management of Gambir train station in Central Jakarta plan to construct fences around the complex to deter street vendors who continually cause traffic problems in the area.

The station's operational division spokesman, Zainal Abidin, said on Tuesday that the station had already started organizing vendors within the area so that problems were minimized.

"This is the first step before we erect the fence. We will also close the middle gate which has always been damaged," Antara quoted him as saying.

Construction of the fences, he added, aimed at deterring street vendors from trading in the area.

"Many vendors from the nearby National Monument (Monas) have also moved to the station," he said.

Zainal also urged people waiting for buses to use the nearby bus stop instead of waiting in front of the station and causing further traffic congestion. (hdn)
