Galeforce winds rip through N. Sumatra

More than 10 houses were seriously damaged and some destroyed on Sunday as a strong thunder storm with galeforce winds swept through the North Sumatra town of Deliserdang.

Strong winds also uprooted trees and ripped through cultivated fields, Antara reported. No casualties were reported after the storm, which lasted for just one hour, at around 2 p.m. local time.

Heavy rain and strong winds brought visibility on Tanjung Morawa tollroad down to just 10 meters.

Head of Tanjung Morawa subdistrict Yusuf Siregar and several of his senior colleagues visited the affected area.

Heavy downpours also hit several parts of Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, flooding Jl. Mandala bypass and Marindal.

According to meteorologists, North Sumatra will experience high rainfall, stormy weather this month.
