Fugitive JSX bomber sent to Cipinang jail

JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta Stock Exchange bomber and grenade- thrower at the Malaysian Embassy, who escaped from military police detention in July, was brought to Cipinang Penitentiary on Wednesday night.

Second. Corp. Ibrahim Hasan was escorted by Jakarta Military Police chief, Col. Subagja Jiwapraja to the penitentiary where he would occupy a tightly guarded cell.

"We will increase security around his cell as he has escaped detention before," said Siswandi, who works at the jail.

He added that Ibrahim is neither allowed to have any visitors nor contact with other convicts in the penitentiary. His lawyer will be required to ask permission from the head of Cipinang Penitentiary if he wants to consult his client, Siswandi said.

On Aug. 22 Ibrahim was sentenced to life in prison by the South Jakarta District Court for his involvement in last year's Jakarta Stock Exchange bombing, which killed 11 people and destroyed 200 cars.

Earlier, in a separate trial, the district court also sentenced him to eight years in prison for the illegal possession and use of ammunition and explosives.

He did not attend the trials, which were jointly conducted by civilian and military judges, as he was still at large.

Ibrahim, who was a member of the Army Strategic Reserves Command (Kostrad), escaped on July 16, when the car, in which he was being taken to the hospital from military police detention, suffered a flat tire.

He was caught last month in Lhokseumawe, North Aceh, where he had allegedly joined the separatist group, The Free Aceh Movement (GAM). He was later flown by helicopter to military police detention in Jakarta.

Ibrahim's getaway from his previous detention had caused the suspension of then Jakarta military police chief, Col. Joestiono. (06)
