Fuel shortage hits Aceh

EAST ACEH, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam: Aceh has been suffering from fuel shortages for the past two months, leaving many gas stations in the province unable to meet demand.

All four gas stations in Langsa municipality are regularly overrun by long lines of vehicles.

Many motorists have been forced to purchase fuel from retailers for above market prices, even though it is common knowledge that most retailers mix their fuel with kerosene.

"It is hard to get fuel. During a week, a gas station may only be opened for three days," Syarifah, a fuel retailer, told The Jakarta Post.

She sells premium gas for Rp 3,500 (38 US cents) per liter, compared to the market price of Rp 2,400 per liter. -- JP
