Freshman killed by senior

BOGOR: A high school student died on Tuesday after being beaten by a fellow student for his failure to collect funds for the celebration of graduating students who had just completed their final exams.

The victim, Dandi Suniawijaya, 16, was a first-year student at SMUN 3 state senior high school.

Fadli Gazali, 18, a third-year student, was arrested by the police later in the afternoon while he was eating meat ball soup at a food stall not far from his school.

He admitted to beating Dandi at about 9:45 a.m. behind the Hero supermarket on Jl. Pakuan, located 30 meters from the school.

Fadli, who was the fund raising coordinator for the celebration, said that the first-year class was expected to contribute a total of Rp 220,000, while the second-year class was to contribute a total of Rp 100,000 to the graduates' post-exam celebration.

Dandi had been appointed to collect money from the first-year class, but he had not turned in the money by the deadline on Friday.

On Tuesday, Fadli, accompanied by his friends Oki and Sanda, found Dandi and beat him up. After Dandi collapsed, he was taken to a nearby medical clinic, where the doctor said that Dandi was already dead.

His body was sent to the Indonesian Red Cross hospital. -- JP
