Fresh tomatoes for prosecutors

JAKARTA (JP): Student demonstrators hurled dozens of fresh tomatoes at the Attorney General's Office compound at Jl. Sultan Hasanuddin No.1, South Jakarta, on Monday as they protested to demand an independent prosecutors' office.

"This office symbolizes the death of justice in the country," Burhanuddin from the Syarif Hidayatullah Institute for Islamic Studies said.

More than a hundred students from various institutes grouped together in the Alliance of Indonesian Students' Formal Bodies (Alfonso) staged a rally outside the compound, calling for the Attorney General Marzuki Darusman to step down.

"Marzuki should leave office because he has failed to uphold the law and justice," a student said in a speech during the thirty-minute demonstration.

The students later headed for the Supreme Court and the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, to join their colleagues in demanding the resignation of President Abdurrahman Wahid.(bby)
