Fresh ideas needed on Iraq

It's becoming more and more evident that the unity around the U.N. sanctions imposed on Iraq is cracking. Lots of fresh ideas are needed to make sure that Saddam Hussein is disarmed. A great part of the responsibility must be put on U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell's shoulders.

At the end of this month, talks will be held between the U.N. and Iraq about how the deadlock can be broken. The role of the world organization is central -- it is there the conclusive decisions will be made -- but the question is if the real challenge does not lie in the hands of the new U.S. secretary of state.

It is he who will scrape together the remains of the coalition that once freed Kuwait, it is he who will try to recreate the unity and the concord.

This is no easy task, and everyone, excluding those who have let Baghdad win the propaganda war, realizes the value of him succeeding.
