French chauvinism

Jacques Chirac has been reviled for his arrogant decision to disregard the wishes and rights of the Pacific peoples and others around the world including Indonesia. (Actions)

He has also received some praise for urging a stronger interventionist stand against the appalling Bosnian Serbs. (Words)

While most agree that actions speak louder than words, perhaps some words from some fellow French may clarify Chirac's position. From Charles De Gaulle (former President):

(1) "I was France."

(2) "France cannot be France without greatness."

(3) "The great leaders have always stage-managed their effects."

(4) "A great country worthy of its name does not have any friends."

(5) "When I want to know what France thinks I ask myself."

(6) "I have heard your views. They do not harmonize with mine. The decision is taken unanimously."

And from Andre Gide:

"It is unthinkable for a Frenchman to arrive at middle age without having syphilis and the cross of the Legion of Honor."
