Free circumcision for students

JAKARTA (JP): The student senate at the Medical School of the University of Indonesia held a one-day free circumcision service for teenagers living near the Salemba campus in Central Jakarta on Sunday.

The team of doctors used the cafeteria tables to circumcise over 48 boys from the nearby Paseban elementary school.

According to one of the committee members, Irfan Taufik, the mass circumcision service was an annual event in the senate's agenda.

"But this is the first time we've done it on campus," he said.

The fund, Irfan added, came from the senate's budget and from various benefactors.

Along with the service, the senate also organized a charity bazaar by offering a limited package of basic commodities, such as rice, sugar, instant noodles and detergents -- and at much cheaper prices than the market price -- to local residents. (09)
