Fraud in decoration contest

The assistant to the City Secretary, Bambang Sungkono, urged
the organizing committee of the Gateway Decoration Competition
1994 (JAKPRO) to clarify the confusion caused in the presentation
of prize money.

"The committee should observe the prize guidelines, drawn up
by the deputy governors with the aim of improving people's
welfare," Bambang told reporters at City Hall on Thursday.

The winner of the first prize, chosen by the committee, sent a
letter to the Terbit evening daily recently questioning why they
received only Rp 2 million (US$917.43) of the Rp 15 million
promised to them by the committee.

Moelyadie, a designer for the Cempaka Putih Barat subdistrict
gate decoration, said that based on JAKPRO's committee
evaluation, no contestants were eligible for first place due to
lower-than-expected quality.

The organizer awarded various prizes with a total value of Rp
50 million.(yns)
