FPI members go on trial

JAKARTA: The South Jakarta District Court on Monday tried two members of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) -- Riyan Fahriza and Eka Jaya -- for vandalizing night-spots in Kemang, South Jakarta during the fasting month of Ramadhan last year.

Prosecutor Agnes Triani said that the two men vandalized the Stardeli Cafe on Oct. 22 after forcing open a rolling door.

Agnes told the trial that Riyan used a billiard stick to destroy a number of goods in the cafe, including photos on its walls, and was assisted by Eka, according to Tempointeraktif.com.

Meanwhile, other FPI members damaged bottles and liquor glasses.

If convicted the two will face imprisonment of up to five years.--JP
