Four killed in road races

UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: Four motorcyclists who turned the streets into an illegal racing circuit were killed in separate crashes last month, police said over the weekend.

Ujungpandang traffic police chief Maj. Dedi Kusnadi said racing had been held on particular streets at dawn during the just-ended fasting month.

Jl. Cenderawasih in the city's south, Jl. Hertasning near the crowded Panakkukang residential area and Jl. Pongtiku in the north were favored spots for motorcyclists, and Paotere toll road was popular among car racers.

Dedi admitted that due to the small number of personnel, the police were overwhelmed by the illegal activity that scared the public, Antara reported.

Police have impounded 70 motorcycles used in the road racing and their riders will be prosecuted, he said. (pan)
