Four factories named as polluters

SURABAYA: Four factories could face legal action after they were accused by the administration here of dumping industrial waste into the Surabaya River,

City administration spokesman Harry Tjahyono named the four as: the Gresik-based paper company PT Adiprint Suraprinta, cloth dying company PT Chuey Chiey along with tofu factories PT Sidomakmur and PT Soponyono.

The latter three factories are located in Surabaya.

Harry said the discovery was made by a joint operation team during a recent river inspection. Their report has been submitted to the East Java governor.

Harry said PT Adiprima disposed highly polluted waste water into the river as it had neglected to fix the company's water processing facility which had been broken since March.

PT Chuey Chiey did not have a water processing facility at all and merely dumped waste without distilling the chemicals used in the dying process.

The two tofu factories also lacked necessary water processing facilities.

"All four factories committed serious environmental violations," Harry said.(nur/emf)
