Formula Asia final scheduled for Sunday

JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Motorsports Association (IMI) will hold the final round of the Gudang Garam Formula Asia National Championship at the Sentul International Circuit in Sentul, West Java, on Sunday.

"Ten drivers have confirmed to compete in the final round," an IMI's official for Formula Asia division, Seno, told a press conference Monday.

Moreno Soeprapto is currently leading the race by collecting 135 points which is almost impossible to be closed by second finisher Haridharma who only has 97 points. Many observers believe Moreno will easily grab the national title.

"He doesn't have to win on Sunday. Finishing in second place will be more than enough for him to grasp the national title," said Karel Lahilatu, an executive of the circuit.

Sunday's event will also feature other numbers including 500cc superbike, N-group car, and scooter races. The association has set Nov. 19 as the final rounds for all bike races.

"We can't expect to have international events organized in the circuit given our current condition. That's why we are promoting more national events there," said Bambang, an IMI official responsible for the superbike division.

"IMI has approached local clubs to take part in the national series held in Sentul. We have also set a schedule for next year. So far, we have received good responses," he added.

Indonesian Formula 3000 driver Ananda Mikola, who is driving under the banner of the World Racing Team (WRT), will give a coaching clinic on Thursday at the circuit. The clinic is not only addressed at racers but also common drivers who want to learn safe fast driving. It will include in-class and driving sessions. (nvn)
