Former village head killed

KENDAL, Central Java: A former village head was killed and 14
homes were destroyed in a riot during a village election in
Margorejo in the Cepiring district here.

Several recent village head elections in Central Java have
similarly ended in violence.

Kendal Police chief Lt. Col. Saiful Bahri said police were
investigating the incident.

The victim, Fauzi, 50, was believed to have been killed in his
home. He had led protests against the installment of his rival,
Wasono Lestari, as village head. Wasono won the election two
months ago.

About 100 supporters of Fauzi sought revenge but failed to
find Wasono, Saiful said. (har)
