Former Navy chiefs attend ceremony

SURABAYA: Five former Navy commanders were present at a ceremony marking the 52nd Indonesian Fleet Day here Saturday.

The five retired admirals -- Soebyakto, R. Kasenda, Sudomo, M. Romli dam M. Arifin -- were given front row seats along with current Navy commander Adm. Arief Kushariadi.

Armed Forces commander Gen. Feisal Tanjung praised the work of the Navy.

"The Navy has done its duty well, both in national and international affairs, in terms of maintaining peace and security as well as in sociopolitical matters," Feisal said as quoted by Antara.

He added that the Navy's participation in helping maintain peace and security had grown in quantity and quality, and it had carried out its role in national development.

Saturday's ceremony, which was attended by thousands of spectators, was highlighted by a fleet review. (mds)
