Foreigners arrested for drug deal

JAKARTA (JP): Police have arrested three foreigners and a local for their alleged roles in a drugs transaction, believed to be heroin.

A reliable source at the Central Jakarta police station said the suspects, including two Nigerians and a Canadian, were detained near the McDonald's outlet at the Sarinah building on Jl. M.H. Thamrin on Tuesday evening.

"They were arrested by the local police after a heated debate," a police source, who refused to be named, said yesterday.

After a brief examination, the police found eight small plastic containers filled with white powder and US$13,000 in cash.

When asked for confirmation, City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said that all four men were still being interrogated by the Jakarta narcotics detectives.

"We have not yet determined whether the powder is heroin," Iman said. (bsr)
