Ford pushes for CVT

DETROIT: Ford in the United States is considering a radical plan to phase out all automatic transmissions in the U.S. and replace them with continuously variable transmissions (CVT).

Although still in the development stage, Ford is serious about using a modern version of CVT, claiming secret, breakthrough technology makes it robust enough for powerful engines.

Ford is testing a CVT on a 149Kw Taurus sedan.

A CVT transmission will be fitted to a Windstar minivan next year.

Nissan and Honda have been using CVT transmissions in their small cars.
