Flying van kills man

JAKARTA (JP): A traffic attendant was crushed to death by a Toyota Kijang van as the vehicle was sent spinning by a passing electric train in Pejaten Timur subdistrict, South Jakarta on Saturday.

South Jakarta Police deputy chief of detectives First. Insp. Siswono said that Abu Jalil, 46, a resident of Pejaten Timur, was standing on the intersection of Jl. Seno Raya and Jl. Kemuning Raya when the car suddenly spun toward his direction and knocked him over.

According to South Jakarta Police traffic deputy chief First. Insp. Siswono, the van, driven by Jumantik, tried to cross the railway track from Jl. Kemuning Raya next to the crossing as the train was approaching.

The car passengers, Siti Urairoh, 25, and Agustina, 1, also suffered severe injuries and are currently being treated at Siaga Hospital.

"Local residents had shouted at Jumantik not to cross the railway track, but he carried on regardless," Siswono said.

He added that both Jumantik and Agustina were unconscious when they were rushed to hospital.

"Jumantik later told us that he crossed the railway track after he saw a motorcycle in front of him doing it," Siswono said. (ylt)
