Flood victim found
JAKARTA (JP): The body of a teenager who was washed away in a flooded West Jakarta waterway on Saturday was found yesterday about 100 meters from where he reportedly jumped into the small Grogol river.
The body of 16-year-old Adi Sudian, a primary school dropout, was found by local residents.
His uncle, Slamet, drowned trying to rescue his nephew from the flooded river. Slamet's body was found on Sunday. The river flooded, in Sunday's torrential rains, near their home behind the Kompas building complex in Central Jakarta,
Witness Sandy, 18, said Slamet immediately jumped into the river after he heard Adi's screams for help.
"Knowing his nephew was in a big trouble, Slamet abruptly jumped into the river to lend a hand," Sandy said.
Relatives said Adi could not swim but enjoyed playing with friends in the waterway, particularly during the rainy season when the small Grogol river's level rises.
Sandy said Adi was passing a small bridge on the way to his house when he saw three of his friends swimming joyfully in the river.
"When he jumped into the river, he apparently hit the body of his friend, Sefri," Sandy said.
The accident might have affected Adi's concentration and made him scream for help, he said.
His body was found an hour later about 400 meters from the scene.
They were buried yesterday. (bsr)
