Flood hits Central Java
PURWOREJO, Central Java: Floods swept through 35 villages in
the Purwerejo and Kebumen regencies in Central Java over the
weekend, killing one person and destroying dozens of houses.
A local administrator told The Jakarta Post Sunday that 15
villages in Kebumen and 20 in Purworejo were flooded, with water
levels ranging from 0.5 meter to one meter deep.
Purworejo regent Goernito said the flood in his regency was
caused by the Dlanggu river overflowing following incessant heavy
rains.
The flood swept through Kebumen after a flood dike burst.
Reliable sources said the embankment was repaired only last
month. (wah/06)
