Flag raising for five days

JAKARTA (JP): Governor Sutiyoso has called upon city residents to raise the national flag from Aug. 14 to Aug. 18, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., in celebration of the 56th Independence Day.

He also suggested that city residents follow President Megawati's state address, which will be broadcast live on television from 10 a.m. on Aug. 16, a day ahead of Independence Day.

As for city government institutions, the governor instructed them to hold a flag-raising ceremony beginning at 8 a.m., and then to follow on television a similar ceremony to be held at the Merdeka Palace grounds.

He also instructed the city administration offices to decorate their buildings with red-and-white flags and banners.

Heads of subdistricts are expected to hold activities involving local residents.

The governor also asked them, as well as high-level officials in mayoralties and districts, to organize events to entertain the public.
