Five candidates for Aceh governor

BANDA ACEH, Aceh: The speaker of the Aceh provincial legislature, Teuku Djohan, said yesterday that the province would present five candidates to the Ministry of Home Affairs on April 13 for the next governor.

"The five names were filtered out of hundreds from all sections of society," Djohan said, as quoted by Antara.

The five candidates are incumbent governor Syamsuddin Mahmud; Abdullah Puteh, the secretary-general of Golkar-affiliated organization MKGR; Iskandar Hoesin, the head of the provincial transmigration office; Ministry of Home Affairs expert staffer Asnawi Hasjmy and Dayan Dawood, the rector of a local university.

According to Djohan, Syamsuddin is the only candidate that has received the open backing of all four factions in the provincial legislature.
