Fit & proper test for legislators

In line with people's demands for transparency, a number of people who have been short-listed as candidates for posts in the judicial/executive body had to go through fit-and-proper tests prior to taking up their designated posts.

It is an encouraging step in the effort to eliminate corruption, collusion and nepotism. Also, in our goal to establish a "New Indonesia", we have to find the right man for the right position. To this end, I am of the opinion that fit-and-proper tests should also be applied in the appointment of the legislators.

I am raising this issue as I am disappointed with the performance of the current legislators. It has been understood that most members of the legislative body were chosen by their own political parties. Now that one year has already passed, the legislators who are supposed to represent the people, are only busy criticizing government policies instead of working out ways together with the government to combat the crises that have become quite a burden to Indonesia. On the other hand, the people are hoping that all those senior citizens can find a speedy solution to overcome the current crises.
