First cyber crime trial

YOGYAKARTA (JP): The country's first cybercrime trial will begin in Semarang soon following the arrest of a local university student, charged with making illegal transactions over the Internet.

Multimedia expert Roy Suryo said after a meeting with senior Central Java police detectives, a specific date for the court hearing remained undetermined as police were still making final adjustments to the dossier on the suspect, identified only as Adh.

Roy, who has been hired by Central Java Police as an IT consultant, said that he had suggested the suspect be charged under article 362 of the Criminal Code on stealing and article 22 of Law No. 36/1999 on telecommunications for the illegal use of telecommunication devices.

The suspect was arrested when he received a personal digital assistant ordered through the Internet using another person's credit card number.

Such crimes have been rampant in Yogyakarta, with 10 people having been arrested as of June and 110 more being investigated. (23)
