Fires drive tigers, monkeys
BOYOLALI, Central Java: Four Javanese tigers and some monkeys
have fled the fires destroying their habitat in the forests of
Mt. Merbabu, Antara reported yesterday.
The news agency did not elaborate on how it came up with the
number of tigers but quoted the police chief of the Selo and
Cepogo subdistricts, Sgt. Khanafi, as saying that villagers had
been hearing strange sounds in nearby bushes.
Boyolali district police chief Lt. Col. I.G.M. Nurdjana said
the animals had been spotted close to the villages but had not
caused any harm. (swe)
