Fire razes T. Duren police station
JAKARTA: Officers from Tanjung Duren police subprecinct in West Jakarta were forced to vacate their headquarters, which was burned down on Sunday afternoon.
The fire started at about 2:50 p.m. but firefighters, whose station is located some 200 meters from the police station, managed to put the fire out after deploying nine fire engines.
Their rapid response spared the nearby residential area from being consumed by fire.
Ali Baskoro, a fire fighter, told Antara news agency that the fire started at the rear section of the police station where the detention cells were located. Ali also said the fire agency had yet to discover the source of the fire.
Meanwhile, Tanjung Duren subprecinct police chief, Comr. Suparmin told Sonora radio station that his officers had been unable to save all the files, forcing the officers to requestion the inmates.
Suparmin, however, gave an assurance that his police station would continue its service to the public, in coordination with West Jakarta Mayor Sarimun Hadisaputra.
"I am very grateful that the mayor allowed us to use the old West Jakarta mayor's office on Jl. S. Parman," he said.
No fatalities were reported but 22 inmates were evacuated to the nearby West Jakarta Police Headquarters. -- JP
