Fire destroys traditional market

BANJARNEGARA, Central Java: Fire destroyed on Tuesday 600 kiosks belonging to 304 traders at a traditional market in the district of Klampok, Banjarnegara regency, causing an estimated Rp 2 billion in losses. No fatalities were reported.

Banjarnegara Police chief Comr. Winarno told The Jakarta Post by phone on Wednesday that police had not yet determined the cause of the fire and there were no suspects.

"We have asked the criminal laboratory at the provincial police headquarters in Semarang to investigate the fire," he said.

One witness, Muhrom, said the fire began at about 7:30 p.m. at a kiosk belonging to a man identified as Rokidi. "The fire spread to other kiosks very fast before anybody could do anything to stop it."

Six fire engines deployed to the scene put out the fire at about 11 p.m. (45)
