Fire at Graha Unilever building

Two fires on Sunday gutted a meeting room on the sixth floor of the Graha Unilever building on Jl. Gatot Subroto in South Jakarta and a house on densely-populated Jl. Penjernihan in Karet, Central Jakarta.

No fatalities nor injuries were reported.

Abdul Lani, an officer at the City Fire Department's call center said that the fire at the Graha Unilever building began at 3:30 p.m. The South Jakarta Fire Department deployed five fire trucks to the scene and the fire was extinguished by 4:30.

The cause of the fire was reportedly a short circuit.

Similarly, the Central Jakarta Fire Department deployed eight fire trucks to extinguish the fire at the home of Sumardji in Karet. The house is located behind the office building belonging to the Independence Bull National Party (PNBK).

Fortunately, the fire department managed to contain the fire before it spread to other houses. --JP.

Police foil illegal shipment of timber

JAKARTA: Police said on Sunday that they had managed to foil an illegal shipment of timber worth Rp 500 million in the Thousand Islands waters off north Jakarta late last week.

TheDanau Hidayah II, which had been transporting the 650-cubic-meters worth of timber from Central Kalimantan toward Banten province, did not have the required documents, including the document of legal forest yield (SKSHH).

"We seized the boat along with the timber and arrested the boat's captain," said chief of city police for the water and air division, Adj. Sr. Comr. Haris Kabilah.

The shipment of illegal timber, Haris said, violated Law No. 41, 1999 on forestry article 78, which carries a maximum fine of Rp 10 billion and maximum imprisonment of five years. --JP.
