Fashion meets photography in Leslie Kee's exhibition
Ve Handojo, Contributor, Singapore
Celebrated Singaporean photographer Leslie Kee whose comprehensive portfolio includes capturing images for GQ, Vogue, V, and Rolling Stones, displayed his work during the Singapore Fashion Festival, March 24-April 3, 2005.
His extensive works were structured as a corridor of images of respected icons; Paris Hilton, Daniel Wu, Shu Qi, Shawn Yue, Naomi Campbell, Maggie Cheung and Quentin Tarrantino to name a few. Printed in various sizes -- from postcard to super poster -- the portraits blended with one another, then also with the crowds of Wisma Atria -- the shopping mall where this humble exhibition took place.
The photographs then became an interactive art installation attracting mall-goers passing through this colorful corridor to take pictures of themselves beside the images of their idols. Spectators then became a part of the exhibition, as they blended with the portraits of the celebrities.
Kudos to the straightforward concept of bringing the sometimes overlooked fashion photography so much closer to the public, and in this case the visitors of the shopping mall that is filled with multinational fashion brands.
Not much of a statement, yet this showcase is directly aimed at the core target audience, and at the same time is publicity for Leslie Kee himself, thus strengthening his superior position in the field.
