Family killed in landslide

SEMARANG: Torrential rain in Central Java over the past week has caused a landslide in Pekalongan, some 100 kilometers west of here, killing a family of three.

Siswoyo, 45, his wife Tarsem, 35, and their daughter Sustiyani, 12, were killed in a landslide that buried their house in Sidomulyo village on Sunday. It is believed floodwaters carried their bodies to a river, where people found them floating later in the day.

Some 1,500 houses in four districts in Semarang were also 50 centimeters under floodwater, forcing residents to seek refuge.

No fatalities were reported in the Semarang flood, but 41 houses were severely damaged. (har)
