Falling rock kills couple

SEMARANG: A married couple died on Monday afternoon after being hit by a falling rock in a sand quarry in Kendalsari village, Klaten, 100 kilometers south of here.

Central Java Police spokesman Lt. Col. M. Ramlie said on Tuesday that the couple, Dadi Wiyono, 55 and Minem, 50, were busy quarrying sand when a huge stone fell from the top of a cliff above them.

The couple's granddaughter, Setyaningsih, survived the incident with minor injuries.

"The rock, weighing about 30 tons, fell from a height of seven meters. We think this is a pure accident as nobody would be able to push such a giant rock," Ramlie said. (har/edt)
