Fake money rampant in poll campaign

SURABAYA: The circulation of counterfeited notes in East Java province rose 300 percent to Rp 222 billion (US$ 23.4 million) in the first quarter of this year, from Rp 55 billion in the same period last year.

Chief of the economic and monetary section at Bank Indonesia's Surabaya branch Wijoyo Santoso alleged on Friday that the sharp increase was attributed to the holding of legislative and presidential election this year.

He alleged that part of the money was used for campaign spending. -- JP
