Factory workers strike in Semarang

SEMARANG: About 2,000 employees of PT Sae Aparel garment factory went on strike here on Friday demanding a pay hike and better welfare benefits.

The peaceful strike began at about 7 a.m. and ended around noon, with workers shouting slogans in the factory compound.

Without going into detail, the strike's coordinator, Kuncoro, said the workers were demanding welfare benefits which were currently unavailable to them.

He added that they were also demanding an increases in daily food and transportation stipends, along with added incentives for those working the night shift.

The protest ended after company representatives met with the workers and promised to consider their demands. (har)
