ExxonMobil clarifies

We read with interest your story ExxonMobil accused of polluting environment with hazardous waste (The Jakarta Post, Nov. 20). There are a number of important points that I would like to make to correct the inaccurate and misleading statement about EMOI in the article.

1. For over 30 years, ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia Inc. (EMOI) has conducted its operations in Aceh with great concern for the environment. Extensive safety, health and environmental management systems are in place to effectively handle any byproducts of our oil and gas business that need special attention.

2. It is EMOI's policy to comply with all applicable laws and regulations regarding hazardous materials and we have systems in place to manage waste in accordance with environmental laws and regulations.

3. EMOI environmental management systems are consistent with GOI regulations and ExxonMobil's global company policies and practices. We rigorrously monitor all of our operations in Aceh and report the results of our activities to the appropriate authorities at all levels in the government of Indonesia. We work together with local agencies and communities to investigate any environmental concerns raised by outside parties.

EMOI strongly encourages concern and respect for the environment, and regularly emphasizes every employee's responsibility for achieving high environmental performance and ensuring safe and efficient operating practices.

We manage our business with the goals of preventing incidents and strictly controlling any effects of our business on the surrounding environment and communities.

R.I. WILSON, President and General Manager, ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia Inc.
