Expat community donates to schools

JAKARTA: The International School of Bogor and Bogor Expats on Sunday donated 260 sets of chairs and desks to two elementary public schools.

"We are really concerned that the 520 students there will have problems with their health and bone growth if they have to sit and learn every day on the cold floor, as they've done for the past year," Herdiana Kiehl, the school's project coordinator, said in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Monday.

She also expressed concern over the small amount of money budgeted by the government that was not enough to buy school furniture and equipment, or to renovate the buildings.

Herdiana added that the group was concerned about teachers' salaries, which were often below that for a house servant. -- JP
