Ex-cop, politician form group

JAKARTA: A number of figures announced on Friday the establishment of the Alliance of Indonesia's Saviors, with the aim of campaigning for a peaceful election.

Former Jakarta Police chief Comr. Gen. (ret) Nugroho Djajoesman was named chairman of the group, whose members include former minister-cum-politician Fuad Bawazier, lawyer Adnan Buyung Nasution, former intelligence official Soeripto, secretary- general of the Indonesian Unity Party (PSI) Jumhur Hidayat and labor union activist Eggy Sujana.

"We want to enable the elections to run in a peaceful, democratic, fair manner free from intimidation," said Nugroho, who recently won a case against President Megawati Soekarnoputri and National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar at the Administrative Court over his early retirement.

Nugroho, however, said the group would discuss their proposed concrete actions only during a congress due to take place in the near future. "We are currently in the phase of consolidation," he said. -- Antara
